The Town of Amherst operates a Transfer Station and Recycling Center which serves as a collection point for trash and recyclable items for authorized residents of Amherst Pelham and Shutesbury. Located approximately two hundred kilometers northwest of the province capital Halifax and three kilometers from Nova Scotia New Brunswick Border Amherst is positioned in the geographic center of the Maritime Provinces. Materials must be placed curbside by 700 am on Tuesday May 21 Tuesday June 4 Tuesday October 22 and Tuesday November 5.

Beginning on November 4th 2019 The Highway Department located at 1042 North Forest Road will have 3 organic recycling totes on site where residents may bring their compostable. Garbage is picked up every Wednesday set out by 600 am. The Pay-As-You-Throw program is available to Amherst residents who generate a small quantity of trash and recycling and can transport it to the Amherst Transfer Station and Recycling Center as needed.
